One of my favorite quotes is Yogi Berra’s riff on a Lewis Carroll Quote. “If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll end up someplace else.” I believe that’s especially true for entrepreneurs and businesses. It’s critical to think through and have a plan for how you are going to share your products and services online. Sharing posts in real time is great, but having a plan that goes out a week or two (or even a month!) is better.
To get started, ask yourself the following questions:
- What platforms should I post on?
- Where are my followers spending their time?
- How often will I post?
- What time of day works best for my followers?
Once you know those things, you can start thinking about the mix of posts you’ll share. Be careful to not share promotional post after promotional post. Followers – even the ones who love you – will start to tune your posts out. Aim for a mix of informational/educational, lighthearted fun, and promotional posts. Give your followers a glimpse into ‘a day in the life’ as a promotional post because it shares your ‘why’ but it doesn’t feel promotional.
Now that you have a strategy, the final step is to write it down. You can still be flexible and change up your posts for a given day, but writing the strategy down will give you a framework to build on. For example, share something motivational every Monday, something brand specific every Wednesday, and something light and fun every Friday. Find hashtags that align with your brand. Weave in holidays and awareness days. Then get ready to implement your strategy with some fantastic posts!
